In
his native Australia, Composite Specialties' president
Jeff Burnett campaigned this wild blown altered
which featured one of his hand-crafted bodies.
In 2001,
Jeff brought his knowledge of carbon-fiber to the
United States, and later that year Composite Specialties
became the first company to produce a one-piece
"pre-preg" carbon fiber funny car body.
According
to the company's owner, Jeff
Burnett, "the 'pre-preg'
carbon material produces a much
stronger and more durable product
than a conventional wet lay up.
This year, the company will use
this material in their new carbon
spill plates which were recently
approved by the NHRA.
Several
teams have already ordered spill
plate and spoiler kits. Jim Dunn
Racing is currently running the
first set on their funny car (see photo below).
"The
advantages of having a carbon
spill plate are quite
noteworthy," continued
Burnett. "Using a carbon
spill plate rather than a metal
one allows teams to take weight
off the body of the car while
providing a stronger, more rigid
surface to help keep these cars
hooked up at speeds in excess of
320 mph.
